PETALING JAYA: A 105m retaining wall at the Bukit Pelali residential area in Pengerang, Johor, collapsed at 1pm today after non-stop rain from early morning.

In a statement, Kota Tinggi police chief Hussin Zamora said this is the second such incident in the area. The earlier one had occurred almost a year ago, on Jan 11.

Luckily, no damages or injuries were recorded although there are residential units just under the hillside.

Hussin said the developers have appointed a firm to carry out slope repair work and the company was investigating the collapse, along with the public works department (JKR).

“Residents are advised to follow the instructions of the rescue team if asked to move to a temporary evacuation centre,” he said.

Hussin also said Kampung Mawai Baru and Kampung Bukit Raja Darat in Bayu Damai were hit by flash floods this evening, with 103 flood victims from 33 families evacuated to two centres.

A total of 14 individuals undergoing home surveillance orders have been housed separately, he added. - FMT
