Covid-19 (Jan 30): 4,915 new cases, R-number at 1.14

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported 4,915 new cases of Covid-19 today.

The number of fresh cases was more than the number of Covid-19 patients who recovered, which totalled 3,056. This is expected to contribute to a rise in the number of active cases.

Active cases have been on the rise since Jan 17.

The R-number, which measures the speed at which Covid-19 is spreading, was at 1.14 yesterday.

Any number higher than 1.00 means the outbreak is growing at an accelerating pace, and would lead to an exponential increase in Covid-19 cases if sustained.

It has been above 1.00 since Jan 20.

  • Patients in ICU: 120
  • Intubated: 65

As of today, the number of Covid-19 patients (including suspected ones) in the intensive care unit (ICU) is 16.1 percent lower compared to a week ago.

On the flip side, those who require intubation have increased by 22.6 percent from a week ago.

The Health Ministry will only publish today's breakdown of new cases by states after midnight on its CovidNow portal.

The breakdown by states for yesterday (Jan 29), where 5,139 new cases were reported, is as follows:

Selangor (1,328)
Johor (783)
Kuala Lumpur (560)
Kedah (442)
Kelantan (350)
Negeri Sembilan (317)
Malacca (269)
Sabah (267)
Penang (245)
Perak (199)
Pahang (190)
Terengganu (75)
Putrajaya (57)
Sarawak (29)
