Banned glovemaker ‘not aware’ of US probe

The US Customs have imposed an import ban on disposable gloves produced by three companies in the YTY Group.

PETALING JAYA: A glove manufacturer facing an import ban in the US said today it had not heard of any concerns over forced labour nor was the company aware of an investigation by US Customs.

YTY Industry Holdings Sdn Bhd said a comprehensive progress report on social compliance had been submitted to US authorities in August last year.

Company spokesman Harinder Kaur said it had provided an equally detailed update this month confirming it had complied with all 11 standards of the International Labour Organization regarding forced labour.

Earlier today, the US Department of Homeland Security said US Customs would stop the entry of disposable gloves from the group’s three companies based on information about the use of forced labour in manufacturing.

However Kaur said the company had not heard from US Customs about “any specific area of concern, nor were we made aware that an active investigation was under way at YTY”.

Among the accusations levelled against the YTY group are abuse of vulnerability, deception, retention of identity documents, intimidation and threats, debt bondage, abusive working and living conditions and excessive overtime. - FMT
