KUALA LUMPUR: Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim (BN-Baling) told the Dewan Rakyat today that more people could have lost their lives during the floods last month but divine intervention limited the death toll to 59 people.
“Last month, more than 3,000 people could have lost their lives, but God saved this fortunate land of Malaysia and a little more than 50 people died,” he said during the debate on the recent floods.
Saying that the disaster was a sign from God, Azeez then laid the responsibility of preventing future floods on economic affairs minister Mustapa Mohamed.
“This is actually in the hands of the prime minister’s department, namely the economic planning unit. You have to plan it well, refer the matter to the finance ministry (for budgetary funding), which will then refer it to the environment and water ministry to resolve the issues.
“With full respect to you (Mustapa), don’t study and study anymore. This time around, you have to do it. If you can’t do it, ask somebody else to do it.
“All the more in Kelantan (where Mustapa is MP for Jeli), you have been a minister for more than 20 years. Kelantan’s flood problems is yet to be resolved to this day. What more other states,” he said. - FMT
