Actor Afdlin ready to contest in Johor polls if fielded by PKR

With a long career in the entertainment industry, actor and producer Afdlin Shauki has indicated readiness to make his debut on the political stage if fielded by PKR to contest in the upcoming Johor state election.

While acknowledging speculations surrounding his candidacy, the Johor-born Afdlin (above) said the final decision will be left in the hands of PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.

"Whether I am fielded or otherwise, that is up to Anwar. I am just an ordinary PKR member.

"I have heard that my name might be nominated, but I can't confirm or deny that. If I am fielded, I am ready," he added.

Afdlin said it is important for any individual member of a political party to unite in carrying out their duties.

"We need to work as a team to ensure the duty to serve the people is being carried out well.

"Even if I did not get any position, I will still support any individuals named as a candidate," he said when met after the premiere of "The Assistant" by director Adrian Teh at The Starling, Damansara Utama, today.

At the same time, Afdlin also voiced support for other artists and celebrities who decided to enter politics with the intention to help the people.

"Doesn't matter which party they represented, whether BN, PKR or others. So long as the intention is to serve the people.

"Our mission is to ensure that people's problems are resolved, not for personal power," he added.

Afdlin also credited other local celebrities who had made a name in politics, including Umno's Rim assemblyperson Khaidirah Abu Zahar, who was previously known as an actress, TV personality and director.

"This shows that we artists are not as ignorant as what many people think. Even though we work in the arts, we are all educated and up to date on current issues.

"I feel it is good if there are more artists in politics because they can be our voice because they would know what is happening in the industry," he said. - Mkini
