Several Amanah Youth leaders have been called in for police questioning shortly after they voiced their support in a press conference this morning for the #TangkapAzamBaki rally planned for Saturday (Jan 22).
According to a press notice sent out by Amanah Youth, three of their leaders have been called to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters for questioning tomorrow (Jan 19).
“Following the Amanah Youth press conference held this morning about the peaceful demonstration #TangkapAzamBaki, Amanah Youth lawyer Fadhli Umar, its vice-chief Zubair Rahim, and its mobilisation director Abbas Azmi have been called for police questioning,” the notice read.
It said there will be a press conference held after they are done with the police questioning.
When contacted, Dang Wangi district police chief Noor Dellhan Yahaya said the three Amanah Youth leaders were called to assist in an investigation over a social media posting on Jan 13, 2022.
This morning, Amanah Youth held a press conference announcing their support for the Saturday rally urging authorities to arrest MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki.
They had said they plan to mobilise more than 1,000 members to participate in the rally, as well as at least 10 lawyers to monitor the situation.
They also urged the police to stop intimidating individuals who shared a poster promoting the rally on social media.
It was reported yesterday that the police have not received any application to hold a rally in Dataran Merdeka.
They also warned that holding a rally will be in violation of the current standard operating procedures (SOPs) to curb the Covid-19 pandemic.
Several days ago, a poster calling for the rakyat to join a #TangkapAzamBaki protest started going viral on social media.
The identity of its organiser remains unclear, but the poster had been shared by many including some politicians.
While the location of the demonstration was initially kept under wraps, it has since been revealed that it will be held at Sogo in Kuala Lumpur this Saturday.
The organisers have since released a statement demanding authorities to arrest and start the legal process against Azam as well as to restructure the MACC and for it to be placed under the purview of Parliament.
Azam came under scrutiny recently after allegations surfaced about him having owned shares in two companies back in 2015.
According to Excel Force Bhd’s 2015 annual report, Azam owned 2,156,000 warrants in the company as of March 21, 2016. At the time, Azam was the head of MACC’s investigation division.
However, in a press conference on Jan 5, Azam said he did not do anything wrong as the shares were bought by his brother, who only used his name. - Mkini
