Azam Baki shouldn't drag in the Agong

ADUN SPEAKS | The MACC’s embattled chief commissioner Azam Baki seems quite desperate and panicky.

He knows that his days are numbered.

There are serious allegations about him for buying and holding shares on behalf of his brother and not disclosing the information.

He knows that it was wrong for him to do that but he thinks that since he has explained the matter to the MACC’s advisory board, he thinks he has done the needful.

As pressure mounts for his investigation, he is desperate enough to invoke the name of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

He said that only the Agong could remove him; forgetting for a moment that the monarch would not do such a thing without the advice of the prime minister.

Such a high ranking officer like Azam simply does not understand the nature of the separation of powers in the country and the role of the constitutional monarch.

By invoking the name of the Agong, is Azam trying to show his displeasure towards Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob for not coming to his rescue, like some other ministers.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob

Is Azam saying that Ismail is not fit to be the prime minister just because he has not said anything about the fate of Azam?

It is wrong for Azam, in his utter desperation, to invoke the name of the Agong, who is above politics.

By using the name of the Agong, Azam has indeed unnecessarily dragged the institution of the royalty into politics.

Disrespect for the PM's role

There is no necessity for this. The monarch is to be left alone.

At the same time, Azam disrespected the role of the prime minister as the chief executive of the country.

Just because Ismail Sabri has not stepped in to support him, Azam is upset.

Being silent Ismail Sabri is labelled as a weak prime minister.

A prime minister who seems to enjoy the benefits of a memorandum of understanding with the opposition.

Just imagine Ismail Sabri opening his mouth on the Azam’s matter. His controversial “Keluarga Malaysia” will become more than a joke.

Maybe Ismail Sabri is waiting for Azam to resign, something that will prevent the government from establishing an investigation team.

The writing on the wall is clear: Azam has to go.

But the allegations against him must be investigated, whether he stays on or resigns.

Azam definitely cannot expect the Agong or the prime minister to save him from the present imbroglio. - Mkini
