Kelantan Orang Asli school suspended amid tiger threat

The physical schooling session at SK Bihai in Gua Musang, Kelantan, has been suspended amid concerns of wild tigers that could threaten the safety of the pupils.

Instead, the pupils have been asked to participate in home-based learning until the all-clear is given.

This was after a 59-year-old Orang Asli villager was mauled to death by a tiger at Kampung Sau, near Pos Bihai, Gua Musang, last Friday (Jan 7).

The Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia pursued the tiger for three hours after the incident and shot the creature after it charged at them.

Malaysiakini understands that the Gua Musang district Education Department issued a notice for the safety of the pupils.

"The Gua Musang Education Department informed that the reopening of the school term has been suspended following the tiger threat.

"The resumption of face-to-face school session will only be done after the Kelantan Wildlife and National Parks Department can guarantee that it is safe," a source familiar with the matter told Malaysiakini on condition of anonymity as he is not authorised to speak to the press.

When contacted, Zulkernai Fauzi of the Kelantan Education Department directed queries to the Kelantan Wildlife and National Parks Department, which did not respond to requests for comment. - Mkini
