The police have confirmed a death in custody at the lockup of the Taiping district police headquarters (IPD) in Perak.

Bukit Aman Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (Jips) director Azri Ahmad said this case will be probed by the department’s deaths in custody investigations unit.

He said they received information about the accused’s death at the Taiping IPD lockup at 11am today.

The accused was a 63-year-old Malay man from the Taiping prison, who had been charged under Section 379A and 324 of the Penal Code on April 18, 2021.

“The accused had been placed at the Taiping IPD lockup after the first mention of his case on Jan 11, 2022 while awaiting the next case mention on Jan 14,” Azri said in a statement today. - Mkini
