Bukit Aman to probe yet another custodial death

 

The police have confirmed another death in custody case, this time at the lock-up of the Pengkalan Chepa police station in Kota Baru, Kelantan.

This comes after it was reported four days ago that there had been a custodial death in the lock-up of the Taiping district police headquarters in Perak.

“On Jan 16, 2022, at 4.35pm, Jips was informed about one custodial death at the Pengkalan Chepa police station’s lock-up in Kota Baru, Kelantan,” said Bukit Aman Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (Jips) director Azri Ahmad in a statement today.

He added that the Jips’ custodial death investigations unit would be looking into this case.

The detainee who died was a 37-year-old Malay man who had been arrested under Section 12(2) and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, he said.

The Kota Baru court had given the detainee a remand order of four days, which was supposed to last from Jan 16 to 19.

Previously, Azri had also said they would be investigating the custodial death that occurred in the Taiping district police headquarters’ lock-up on Jan 13.

A day later, it was reported that two police personnel were among four individuals who had been arrested to assist in the investigation of the custodial death in Taiping. - Mkini
