- Kazakhstan's president accepts govt's resignation
- President Kassym Tokayev accepted govt's resignation Wed
- appointed Alikhan Smailov acting prime minister
protests erupted in several places
Calls to attack government and military
After price cap lifted on Jan 1, gas prices doubled
gas hike sprouted rallies attracting thousands
- 2 week emergency - including curfew, restrictions on movement
- price cap on fuel, removed on Jan 1, will now be restored
- freeze on utilities' prices, subsidising rent for poor families
My Comments : By the way I forgot to mention in the other post that smuggling diesel and fuel from Malaysia into Thailand is big business along the border. Some of the southern "separatists" may have a stake in this business. So there is big money involved as well.
Even in very oil and gas rich Kazakhstan the government could not continue subsidising their fuel costs. When the subsidies ended the people protested and brought down the government.
The Americans are possibly involved. The Russians are watching closely. This is their backyard.
