Johor DAP: Umno using state polls to push Ismail Sabri for GE15

Johor DAP believes that a certain faction in Umno wants to make the state a launchpad to push Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob into calling for a general election soon.

Andrew Chen Kah Eng, who is the state DAP secretary, in a statement today claimed Umno leaders Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Najib Razak allegedly want to win the next general election to escape their corruption cases in court.

"Umno is the culprit in pushing for a Johor snap election. It wants Johor to be made the launchpad to trigger a general election against the wishes of its own Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

"Umno, which is now led by former prime minister Najib Razak and president  Zahid Hamidi, wants to win the general election to enable Najib and Zahid to escape jail sentences for their corruption cases.

"This dominant Umno faction is putting the people’s interest at stake. They are dragging the people and the Sultan of Johor, whose sole discretion is required if the state assembly is to be dissolved, into Umno’s power game," Chen (above) said.

His statement came about as rumours about a snap election in Johor are growing stronger.

The state opposition expects that the Johor state legislative assembly might be dissolved after the Chinese New Year next month to pave way for an election.

Chen, who is the Stulang assemblyperson, reiterated Pakatan Harapan's stance made in its top leadership meeting on Dec 27, where the coalition said there was no need for a snap state election in Johor.

"The flood and its aftermath are still unsettled in Johor, and the Omicron variant that is ravaging the world is already in Malaysia. We have to address the people’s needs first.

"Johor Pakatan Harapan is also committed not to cause the fall of the Johor State Government led by Menteri BesarHasni Mohammad at this moment to avoid instability in the state."

Chen stressed that Johor DAP, however, is ready in the event of a snap poll.

According to him, the state party leadership established an election preparation committee in July last year, with Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching as state election director.

"The Johor DAP State Committee and the Election Preparation Committee have been consulting party members across the state to ensure that all are united to fight this battle.

"Johor DAP has also been seeking advice from its national leaders to gain the best insights in our preparation," Chen added. - Mkini
