Johor polls: Muda to decide on pact, Syed Saddiq's candidacy

Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman today said any decision on the party's stance in facing the upcoming Johor state elections will be made collectively by its leadership.

The Muar MP said this includes any decision on whether he would be fielded as one of the party's candidates.

"This is not Syed Saddiq's party. This is a party for all Malaysians and the Muda leadership will discuss it together," he told reporters outside the Dang Wangi police station.

"Internal strategies will be discussed together with the Muda leadership.

"What is clear is that in Johor it must be a collective decision by Muda. My fate, the party's fate is done together," said the former minister.

On Harapan's aim to rope in all Opposition parties including Muda to contest in all 56 Johor state seats, Saddiq similarly said the party's central leadership will be discussing the matter at a meeting tonight.

Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim yesterday said the move to rope in all Opposition parties was necessary to ensure Umno and BN will be defeated in the polls, starting from Johor polls.

Last Saturday, Johor Harapan chairperson Aminolhuda Hassan said the coalition has engaged Muda in discussions about a potential pact for the upcoming Johor election.

Johor Muda chief Mohd Azrol Ab Rahani also previously told Malaysiakini that the party is in a preliminary negotiation with Harapan identifying the seats that Muda aims to contest.

Quizzed on the matter today, Saddiq insisted that Muda will come up with its own stance and fight for the interest of the people of Johor.

"To ensure Johor becomes the beginning of genuine progress and development across Malaysia, and Johor elections should be that benchmark," he said, adding that the outcome of Muda's discussions will be announced soon.

Earlier, Saddiq, together with Muda secretary-general Amira Aisha, was questioned for over an hour in connection with a climate crisis and flood emergency memorandum submission held outside parliament last Thursday.

Saddiq said he had received the memorandum from Muda with proposed solutions for consideration of other lawmakers. - Mkini
