The government which calls itself "Keluarga Malaysia" (Malaysian Family) is intimidated by youths who want to hold a peaceful demonstration, said leaders from the youth wing of Amanah today.
“It seems the government that we have today, going by the name of ‘Keluarga Malaysia’, is scared of (a movement) propelled by the youths.
“Every act of intimidation that was done (by the government) is proof the ‘Keluarga Malaysia’ government is not welcoming,” said Amanah Youth lawyer Fadhli Umar.
He said this in reference to the #TangkapAzamBaki rally that is set to take place this Saturday (Jan 22).
He was speaking at a press conference outside the Dang Wangi district police headquarters today.
Fadhli, Amanah Youth vice-chief Zubair Rahim, and the party’s mobilisation director Abbas Azmi were called into the Dang Wangi police headquarters for questioning after announcing their support for the Saturday rally yesterday.
The trio is being investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code to intentionally insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace.
They are also being probed under Section 233 of the Communciations and Multimedia Act 1988 which criminalises any speech made with the intention to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass another person.
Yesterday, Amanah Youth announced they will mobilise more than 1,000 of its members for the demonstration this Saturday to urge authorities to take action against MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki.
They added that they would prepare 10 to 20 lawyers on the day of the demonstration as observers.
Later that night, they released a press notice announcing they will be questioned by the police over voicing their support for the protest.
When contacted, Dang Wangi district police chief Noor Dellhan Yahaya said the three Amanah Youth leaders were called to assist in an investigation over a social media posting on Jan 13, 2022.
According to Amanah Youth, the protest is still set to be carried out this Saturday, despite intimidation tactics, unless weather conditions do not permit it, such as heavy rains or floods.
They urged for all Malaysians, no matter their race, to participate in the demonstration, assuring that all Covid-19 standard operating procedures will be complied with.
SC’s vague stance on Azam
Abbas added Amanah Youth will be writing to the Securities Commission (SC) regarding their statement yesterday, demanding a full answer on their stance on Azam's shares issue.
“The statement made by the SC stated there was no conclusion on whether there was a breach under Section 25(4) of the Securities Industry (Central Depositories) Act 1991 (Sicda).
“We have to send a letter to get an explanation, and after an explanation is given we will possibly take action,” he said.
The SC concluded its inquiry into Azam's shareholding case yesterday, claiming they were unable to conclusively establish a breach under Section 25(4) of Sicda.
Section 25(4) of Sicda provides that a trading account must be opened in the name of the beneficial owner or an authorised nominee.
Public records show that Azam was a significant holder of warrants in the public-listed company Excel Force MSC Sdn Bhd as of March 2016, when he was head of MACC's investigations department.
Following this, Azam claimed the transaction took place because his trading account was used by his brother, Nasir.
He argued that he had no pecuniary interest in the matter and neither was there any element of conflict of interest.
Offences under Section 25 are punishable with a fine of up to RM3 million, or imprisonment of up to 10 years, or both.
Zubair claimed that similarities can be drawn between the SC’s stance on Azam with similar corruption allegations in the past.
Not naming names, he said the SC issued a statement in the past “backing” a certain individual who also faced corruption charges involving RM2.6 billion.
It is believed he was referring to Najib who faces charges of money laundering and abuse of power after allegedly receiving RM2.6 billion in his personal bank account in March and April 2013, months ahead of the 13th general election.
“Suddenly the SC issues a statement as if backing up Azam Baki, but the statement was extremely general.
“It is like a repeat again (of the past) and we don’t want a scandal like the previous RM2.6 billion. We want Azam Baki thoroughly investigated,” Zubair said.
He also demanded Azam to be fully accountable for the allegations he faces. - Mkini
