Knockout blow for PAS, Bersatu at Johor polls, says Umno man

JOHOR BAHRU: The impending Johor state assembly elections will be a knockout blow for Bersatu and PAS, according to Johor Umno deputy chief Nur Jazlan Mohamed.

He also expects PKR and Amanah to lose most of the seats won in the 2018 general election, or even all, while DAP is likely to be considerably weakened.

He said based on current sentiments, it was obvious that Bersatu and PAS were not needed by Johoreans and would become “history” after the elections.

Most Johoreans expected Bersatu to lose any foothold it had gained in 2018. “The people have realised that the current Bersatu leaders left Umno because they were disgruntled with certain personalities or to escape prosecution,” he said.

He said the failures of two menteris besar from Bersatu during Pakatan Harapan’s time in power had exposed the dearth of good talent in the party.

Nur Jazlan said Umno has a serious trust issue with PAS as it had not been loyal in the past and had nothing to contribute to the Johor elections.

“As far as we are concerned, PAS is not needed here at all. BN is all set to go it alone and we do not need Muafakat Nasional. I believe Bersatu needs it more under the circumstances,” he told FMT.

He said it was difficult to forget the U-turn that PAS made during the Melaka elections, first saying it would work with Umno and then throwing its lot behind Bersatu and Perikatan Nasional.

Nur Jazlan said the outgoing menteri besar, Hasni Mohammad, had led the state well since he took over in 2020 and commands the respect of the politicians and people in the state.

“I believe that the time is right for a new mandate for Hasni,” Nur Jazlan said. - FMT
