MACC probing into KL retention ponds development plans - report

The MACC has initiated a probe into the alleged alienation of six retention ponds in Kuala Lumpur for proposed development projects, according to a media report.

Malay-daily Berita Harian quoted sources who said investigations are ongoing including on allegations related to the proposed developments approved between 2015 and 2020.

"MACC has started investigations on complaints linked to the recent floods (in Kuala Lumpur).

"The probe covers claims that the status of the retention ponds have been converted for development purposes," said the source.

Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh and Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng had on Dec 28 called on MACC to investigate the development plans that ran counter to technical recommendations by the Kuala Lumpur Irrigation and Drainage Department.

Yeoh also said the plan to develop the retention ponds were inconsistent with the Kuala Lumpur City Plan 2020 as revealed in the Auditor-General's Report 2019 Series 2 in September.

Last Dec 28, Yeoh together with Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil and Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai had also lodged a police report seeking an investigation into any wrongdoings in awarding the six identified projects.

The six retention ponds in question were the Batu pond, Nanyang pond, Delima pond, Taman Wahyu pond, Batu 4 1/2 pond, and Taman Desa pond.

Under the initial plan, the Batu pond, Nanyang pond and Delima pond are part of the Sungai Jinjang Flood Retention Pond project, which could store up to 2.5 million cubic metres of floodwater.

The six retention ponds were instead alienated for development projects, such as mixed development projects, affordable housing schemes, recreation parks and service apartments. - Mkini
