Maszlee: If unaddressed, Azam case sets precedent for more corruption

Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik is arguing that the Azam Baki case could set a precedent for a failed nation - if it is left unaddressed.

“If this (case) is allowed, (this case) will set a precedent for Malaysia where (we will) witness corruption dihalalkan (deemed acceptable).

“The rakyat need to stand up to ensure that those responsible for fighting corruption uphold integrity, morality and ensure the future of a cleaner country are truly honest individuals.

“If we remain silent, we will allow ourselves to acquiesce and acknowledge this act of misconduct.

“We will see those in power and those responsible for maintaining the integrity and accountability of this country accumulate as much wealth as possible in the future and brush it off by saying this belongs to my sister, brother, grandfather, grandmother, ancestor and leave it at that,” warned Maszlee (above) at a press conference he held today.

This case, he said, should not be the starting point for a ‘failed nation’.

“(We must) rise up to ensure that Azam (goes on) leave (in order) to be investigated on this case. (The) more dignified (action) is for Azam to resign from his position,” he added.

Maszlee was among several Harapan elected representatives who lodged a police report at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters (IPD) today.

This came in response to the press conference held on Jan 5 by MACC's Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (LPPR) chairperson Abu Zahar Ujang to explain the ongoing turmoil surrounding Azam.

Abu Zahar said the shares were purchased in Azam's name by his younger brother and that Azam had done nothing wrong. Abu Zahar added that Azam had since transferred the shares to the brother.

Azam came under intense scrutiny after allegations surfaced about him having owned shares in two companies back in 2015.

According to Excel Force Bhd’s 2015 annual report, Azam owned 2,156,000 warrants in the company as of March 21, 2016. At the time, Azam was the head of MACC’s investigation division. - Mkini
