KOTA BHARU: New electricity tariffs will come into force from 2022 to 2024 but they will not burden the people, says energy and natural resources minister Takiyuddin Hassan.

He said the new tariff would benefit nearly 85% of domestic account holders out of eight million account holders nationwide.

He said in determining the new electricity tariff, the government took into account the country’s recovery from the economic crisis following the pandemic.

“The government will make an announcement soon. I guarantee that (the tariff) will not burden the people, especially domestic account holders,” he said, adding industrial and commercial accounts would also be subject to the new tariff.

Takiyuddin said more than 40,000 heads of households would benefit from a one-off 100% rebate for December electricity bills.

The government also encouraged the public to use quality energy-saving electrical appliances.

“Although the price is more expensive, our government encourages the use of electrical appliances with four or five-star ratings by providing a rebate of RM200 per household.

“So far, more than 1,100 shop owners and retailers have been listed to redeem the rebate,” he said.

The list of electrical items that can be purchased using the rebate can be accessed at the Seda Malaysia (Sustainable Energy Development Authority) website. - FMT
