An NGO aligned with Pekan MP Najib Abdul Razak has called for a gathering in order to stop what it described as the victimisation of the former prime minister.
Persatuan Sahabat Ulul Amri Malaysia chairperson Syed Muhammad Imran SN Syed Abdul Aziz, in a statement that still carries the Najib-era 1Malaysia logo, said the former prime minister is being denied justice.
Syed Muhammad Imran also accused the MACC of withholding evidence that could prove Najib's innocence.
"We appeal to all Malaysians who sympathise and feel that Najib has been victimised, oppressed and denied his right and justice to turn up in a large number on Jan 23, from 10am to 1pm at the 4th floor of the Putra World Trade Centre (now known as KL World Trade Centre) in Kuala Lumpur," he said.
Najib has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment and an RM210 million fine for money laundering, abuse of power and criminal breach of trust.
This was over the misappropriation of funds from SRC International Sdn Bhd - a former 1MDB subsidiary.
He is currently appealing the conviction a final time at the Federal Court. Najib is also facing charges relating to the misappropriation of 1MDB funds from several other subsidiaries.
Syed Muhammad Imran said the gathering is also to express the people's concerns about various current issues, including the rising cost of food, unemployment, the need for withdrawal from the Employees Provident Fund and floods.
The NGO leader said he lodged a police report about the alleged evidence concealment but is unhappy the matter was instead referred to the MACC.
He also raised the involvement of other individuals in advising Najib with regard to the 1MDB scandal, including former Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz and former minister Nor Mohamed Yakcop, and questioned the lack of an investigation.
Syed Muhammad Imran also accused the previous Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional governments of not pursuing their cases as they could help Najib's own case.- Mkini
