PAS won’t abandon ‘sincere’ Bersatu in Johor, says analyst

A political observer says PAS would rather work with Bersatu than Umno in the Johor elections.

PETALING JAYA: PAS will not ditch Bersatu in the coming Johor elections despite their poor performance at the Melaka polls last November under the Perikatan Nasional banner, said a political analyst.

Political observer Mohd Sayuti Omar said Bersatu is perceived as being more transparent and sincere than Umno.

In addition, PAS had a “bad history” with the Barisan Nasional when it was part of the coalition in the 1970s, he said. PAS felt they had been betrayed by Umno, leading to a political impasse in the Kelantan government that developed into protests and an emergency declaration.

PAS was also more trusting of Bersatu because of Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin, who comes from a pious family.

“Kelantan Umno’s decision to break its ties with PAS is all the more reason for PAS to continue working with Bersatu,” he said.

Although the results of the Melaka elections might cause PAS to think twice about continuing with Bersatu, it would not cause them to reject Bersatu, he said.

“I think Johor PAS would rather cooperate with Bersatu. Only if Bersatu wants to work with Umno, will PAS follow suit,” he said.

Noting the rift in the Islamict party over ties with Umno, Sayuti said PAS’ grassroots remain loyal to the party leadership and would follow whatever decision it makes.

However, he does not expect the rift to lead to an exodus of members akin to how Amanah was formed, saying the divisions in PAS over its ties with Umno only involve “several” leaders.

Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid of Universiti Sains Malaysia said whether Bersatu could rely on support from PAS voters was dependent upon the two being electoral partners. “Once the collaboration breaks down, Bersatu will be deprived of PAS supporters’ votes,” he said.

He said the PAS leadership must carefully gauge the benefits of working with a “corruption-tainted” party like Umno. - FMT
