The Islam Defenders Associations (Pembela) has called for the resignation of Azam Baki as the MACC chief commissioner during the course investigations carried out against him for alleged corruption.
The NGO added that if he had nothing to worry about, he should be 'brave' and 'gentleman' enough to come forward and be thoroughly investigated.
"The police and other authorities such as the Parliamentary Special Committee should be given access to conduct thorough and transparent investigations into cases involving Azam Baki as well as other cases involving MACC.
"During this time, Tan Sri Azam Baki must be brave and 'gentleman' to come forward and be investigated transparently if he is on the right side," said Pembela chairperson Aminuddin Yahaya in a statement today.
Azam recently has come under intense scrutiny after allegations surfaced about him having owned shares in two companies back in 2015.
According to Excel Force Bhd's 2015 annual report, Azam owned 2,156,000 warrants in the company as of March 21, 2016. At the time, Azam was the head of MACC's investigation division.
In a press conference yesterday, Azam said he told the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board that his brother used his trading account to acquire the shares in the two companies in 2015.
The shares have since been transferred to his brother, Nasir.
Call for RCI
Meanwhile, the National Association of Malaysian Muslim Students (PKPIM) has demanded a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to be established to look into all cases involving MACC leaders.
"The issue of corruption involving MACC officers is not something new; in fact, it has been reported several times which has severely affected the credibility of the MACC.
"This will also have a negative impact on the perception and trust of Malaysians towards the MACC in handling corruption cases that occur among the top leaders of the MACC.
"Therefore, PKPIM demands the Malaysian government, led by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to take a firm stance in handling this issue and immediately establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to examine cases involving key MACC leaders," they said in a statement today.
They added that MACC Corruption Prevention Advisory Board (LPPR) Abu Zahar Ujang's statement on the matter did not fully resolve the public's concerns over the MACC's transparency.
Abu Zahar had said that LPPR was satisfied with Azam's explanation that he had neither pecuniary interest nor conflict of interest in the acquisition of the shares. - Mkini
