KUALA LUMPUR: Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor's money laundering trial involving RM7 million was postponed after her lead counsel Datuk Geethan Ram Vincent contracted Covid-19.
High Court Judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan vacated the hearing after Rosmah's counsel Azrul Zulkifli Stork informed the court that the majority of the defence team, including Rosmah, came in close contact with a Covid-19 positive case.
"Only Geethan was tested positive of Covid-19 while the rest - Firoz Hussein Ahmad Jamaluddin, Mohamed Reza Abdul Rahim, P. B. Rajivan Nambiar and Rosmah were issued a home surveillance order.
"Geethan was tested positive (of Covid-19) on Jan 17 and needed to quarantine himself until Jan 26.
"Thus, we apply for today's proceedings to be vacated," he said.
Deputy public prosecutor Poh Yih Tinn said the prosecution is ready if the court decides to continue the proceedings.
The court then vacated the proceedings and fixed Feb 3 for hearing.
Today was supposedly fixed for the court to hear the defence applications to disqualify lead prosecutor Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram and also to recuse Mohamed Zaini as a judge.
Rosmah, 70, is facing 12 charges of money laundering involving RM7.09 million and five counts of failure to declare her income to the Inland Revenue Board (IRB).
She was accused of committing the offences between Dec 4, 2013 and June 8, 2017.
She claimed trial to all the charges which were framed under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFA) 2001 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA) 2001. - NST
