Shafie wants GE15 soon instead of wasteful state elections

 

Warisan president Shafie Apdal has expressed frustration at the serial snap state elections and said a general election should be called instead.

He said doing elections state by state was a wasteful exercise.

"I do hope the general election can be called anytime rather than we spend money on one state (election) and another state, and another state.

"After the (state) election there will be a Parliament election in that state as well," he told reporters in Kota Kinabalu last night.

Malaysiakini obtained a recording of his impromptu presser.

The Johor state assembly was dissolved yesterday, paving the way for the third snap state election since 2020.

Previously, snap state elections were held in Sabah and Malacca after defections collapsed the respective state governments.

A state election was also held in Sarawak as the state government's term had expired last year.

Shafie (above) said besides saving money, having a general election would also make things easier for voters.

Asked about the Johor elections, Shafie said he would be communicating with his ally, Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) president Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman to discuss matters further.

Earlier in the night, former Johor state assemblyperson Suhaimi Salleh (Umno-Kukup) was spotted at the Warisan event Shafie attended and is said to have joined the party.

The Sabah-based party expanded into Peninsular Malaysia last December. - Mkini
