Stop theatrics, Johor exco man tells Syed Saddiq over flood aid

Onn Hafiz Ghazi (right) asked Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman why the MP only arrived on Jan 7 when floods had hit Muar on Dec 31 last year.

PETALING JAYA: In a series of tweets laced with sarcasm and citing facts, a Johor state exco member hit back at Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s criticism of the government for allegedly blocking his Muda team from helping flood victims.

Onn Hafiz Ghazi, who heads the state youth, sports, and tourism affairs committee, urged Syed Saddiq to stop his “theatrics” and focus on real flood relief efforts.

“Allow me to say this YB, you should stop your theatrics. If you really had concern for Muar and the people, why did you only arrive on Jan 7 when the floods had hit Muar on Dec 31 last year?”

He was responding to media reports in which Syed Saddiq had questioned the double standards in helping flood victims and asked why the authorities feared Muda’s efforts in providing flood relief.

He alleged that some of their applications to move in to help victims were blocked or rejected.

Besides house cleaning, the Muda chief claimed that his party’s application to hand over household products to the victims was also turned down.

Hafiz said the district office had responded to Syed Saddiq, explaining that Muda’s application to help clean up houses and hand out household products was incomplete.

“I am sure you, YB, are aware that the DO (district officer) has the power to reject or accept such applications.

“You can contact the DO to discuss the matter. After all, he is under your constituency, right?”

Hafiz said the state government had never prevented any NGO or volunteer group from helping the flood victims.

“We are not scared of anyone and we welcome assistance from anyone who is keen to help.

“I’m sure YB (Syed Saddiq) is aware that two applications by Muda in Segamat had been approved but the team never showed up at one of these locations.”

Hafiz said the Muar district office had also rejected several applications from other NGOs and groups because they did not comply with certain SOPs.

Johor police were reported to be investigating Muda volunteers for sending food aid to flood victims without permission from the local council. - FMT
