Folks, that undersea volcano eruption in Tonga seems to be a much larger disaster. Internet and other communications with Tonga were cut off since the past three days but news and information is beginning to get out.
Here is satellite footage (from 36,000 km up) showing the eruption of that undersea volcano in Tonga. They say this is the largest explosion ever seen from space.
Despite such a massive volcano eruption, so far there have been no deaths reported. I think this is largely because there was no earthquake. An earthquake shakes the earth and sends energy pulsing through both land and sea, thus also creating tsunamis.
This Tonga volcano eruption did cause a tsunami which has hit all around the Pacific Ocean (including California - see the short video below). But it has been a relatively small tsunami likely caused by the surface pressure wave from the volcano eruption.
The bigger threat to the whole world is that huge cloud of dust - a few hundred kilometres wide - which must have pushed up millions of tons of volcanic dust into the atmosphere. That amount of dust will have an effect on the global weather.
It will reduce sunlight penetration and cause a cooling of world temperatures for a while. This may affect crops and agriculture all over the world. Food supplies may be affected and food prices may go up again. I think we will feel cooler temperatures as well. This story is just starting. One after another.
