Zii Jia social media profile pictures go black

Badminton ace Lee Zii Jia today went all black with his Facebook profile picture, hours after the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) decided not to field him in any tournaments for two years.

At the time of writing, there were at least 2,400 comments on his new profile picture in just 30 minutes after it was uploaded.

Most of the comments were supportive of Lee's decision to leave BAM and critical of the latter for suspending him.

The BAM is the sport's governing body, affiliated with the world governing body Badminton World Federation (BWF) that is recognised by the International Olympic Committee (OIC).

All major badminton tournaments - Olympics, World Championships, Thomas Cup, Uber Cup, Sudirman Cup, Super Series and Grand Prix - are organised by the BWF.

Lee had resigned from BAM on Jan 11 and became a free agent. He vowed to continue competing for Malaysia but BAM's decision to suspend him put a stop to that.

Lee is currently ranked seventh by the BWF.

Meanwhile, former badminton doubles ace Koo Kien Keat today emerged to support Lee's decision after BAM's decision to suspend him.

"Everyone gets to choose his or her own path. There is no right or wrong decision nor the best decision in life.

"Looking forward to witnessing your future endeavours with tenacity, positivity and showmanship that you have shown to us as a true Malaysian," wrote Koo on his Facebook page, while specifically addressing Lee.

Koo won the All England Open doubles tournament in 2007 while Lee won the singles tournament last year. - Mkini
