SONGKHLA: Twenty-two Myanmar nationals who were waiting for brokers to take them across the border to Malaysia to work illegally were arrested in the Hat Yai district of this southern province on Saturday, Thai police said.
According to the Bangkok Post, the jobseekers were found hidden in the bushes near the Moo 10 village in Tambon Ban Rai at 7pm by a team of district officials led by three assistant district chiefs for security affairs, supported by defence volunteers and police from Thung Lung station here.
The Myanmars, all men, told the authorities that they had travelled from Myanmar and arrived in Hat Yai on Friday.
They had paid 50,000 baht (RM6,500) each to brokers for employment in Malaysia.
Police said they were waiting in the bushes for the job brokers to lead them across the border into Malaysia.“The brokers fled before the Thai authorities arrived and they arrested the Myanmars. All of them appeared exhausted from the journey,” the report said.
The jobseekers were handed over to the Thung Lung police station for legal proceedings to be taken on the charge of illegal entry, pending deportation by immigration police.
Four of them were found positive for Covid-19 upon testing and have been admitted to hospital for treatment, it said. - FMT
