8 tow truck runners who fought on Penang highway charged

GEORGE TOWN: Eight tow truck runners who fought in the middle of an expressway in Penang over who should get first dibs to attend to a car crash last month were charged at the magistrates’ court here today.

Tan Cheng Hooi, 50, Dharanidharan Y Asokkumar, 30, Lee Soon Aun, 36, Surendren Subramaniam, 27, Lekkeswaran Nanthakumar, 27, Zhafar Megat Zabil, 22, Faiez Ahmad, 21, and Khoo Boo Aik, 47, were charged with rioting.

They were charged with rioting with helmets, metal chains and locks to attack each other on the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway (George Town-bound) on Jan 26 at 2.12pm.

They were charged under Section 148 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum five-year jail sentence and a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Tan, Lee, Khoo and Dharanidharan pleaded guilty to the charge and were fined RM3,000 in default three months’ jail.

The other four pleaded not guilty and were offered RM2,500 bail in one surety each pending trial.

Magistrate Nur Melati Diana Abdul Wahab set March 11 for mention.

Nazri Abdul Rahim prosecuted. Kenzaly Goik appeared for the accused who pleaded guilty while Malkit Kaur and Dilsimran Kaur appeared for the others who claimed trial.

Police had earlier said that a group of 20 men had taken part in a brawl over which group of tow truck runners had the right to tow the vehicles involved in an accident on the expressway. - FMT
