Gerak Independent loses Subang candidate

Political reform group Gerak Independent (GI) has lost one of its proposed candidates to contest in the next general election, just days after a function was held to announce their plans.

Former journalist Charles CJ Chow, who was revealed as GI's independent candidate for the Subang parliamentary seat, announced yesterday that he has formally withdrawn from the group.

"Please note that I have informed Gerak Independent that I will no longer be part of that movement.

"Consequently, I will not be running as an independent candidate for the parliamentary seat of Subang, Selangor," Chow said in a statement.

"Our goals are aligned in that we want to put things right in our country, including enhancing the integrity of Parliament, but we differ on the ways of achieving those goals.

"I wish my friends in GI all the best in their endeavour," Chow said.

When contacted, Chow declined further comments on the reasons behind his move, except to indicate there were differences in opinion over certain strategies by the group.

He went on to stress that there were no personal hard feelings with the other GI members and that it was not an easy decision to make.

Human rights lawyer Siti Kasim announced last Thursday (Feb 17) that she will contest as an independent candidate for GI in the Batu parliamentary seat in the 15th general election (GE15).

GI also announced four other candidates including Chow, KJ John (for Petaling Jaya), Wangsa Maju resident Raveentheran Suntheralingam (Wangsa Maju), and Sabah-based lawyer Roland Cheng (Kota Kinabalu).

It had also previously announced a target to contest in up to 10 Parliament seats in GE15, mostly held by Pakatan Harapan elected representatives. - Mkini
