KUALA LUMPUR: The tax evasion and money laundering trial involving Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah today had to be vacated as his lead counsel is down with fever.

High Court Judge Datuk Muhammad Jamil Hussin was forced to postpone the case to March 28, with the 29th and Apr 27 also fixed for continuation of the trial.

Jamil postponed today's hearing after being informed of lawyer Harvinderjit's condition by another defence lawyer, Farhan Shafee.

Shafee, 69, is facing two counts of money-laundering relating to a RM9.5 million payment he received from former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

He was also charged under the Income Tax Act with two counts of making false declarations to the Inland Revenue Board for not including the RM9.5 million in his tax filing, for the years 2013 and 2014.

The senior lawyer had pleaded not guilty to all four charges on Sept 13, 2018 and seven witnesses have been called to testify so far.

Former Inland Revenue Board (IRB) officer Syed Nasrul Fahmi Syed Mohamad was supposed to take the stand to be cross examined by the defence team today. - NST
