Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) wants the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition to focus on strengthening ties among existing parties before considering new members.
PBS secretary-general Joniston Bangkuai (above) said this was the position taken by the party's political bureau which met today.
"While we welcome support from all Sabahans, we must not rush to form new alliances with parties whose loyalty and true partnership have yet to be proven,” he said.
Yesterday, Malalap assemblyperson Peter Anthony unveiled his new party - Kesejahteraan Demokratik Malaysia (KDM) - which was formally registered on Feb 18.
The first thing on the party's agenda, Anthony said, is to gain entry into the GRS coalition.
GRS - comprising BN, Perikatan Nasional and PBS - was formed in 2020. This was an ad hoc coalition formed for the Sabah state election.
During the election, Anthony retained his seat as a member of Warisan. One of his five opponents was from PBS.
Joniston noted that Anthony was GRS' enemy just over a year ago and trust needs to be built over time.
Any new party intending to join GRS, he said, must demonstrate the correct motivations and long-term contributions to GRS.
"Our priority should be to safeguard the original partners while also further strengthening our internal unity.
"What we want to see is a coalition built based on trust with the interest of the people and the future of the state at heart," Joniston said.
Anthony quit Warisan in December last year, along with Limbahau assemblyperson Juil Nuatim.
At the time, Anthony said he decided to quit because Warisan was spreading its wings to Peninsular Malaysia, thereby leaving its original goal of focusing on Sabah. - Mkini
