PETALING JAYA: The Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council has called on the government to postpone the upcoming Johor elections because of the rising number of Covid-19 cases.
“To ensure that this increase is not used as a political instrument by others, the government should consider postponing the Johor elections,” it said in a statement today.
“If the government refuses to postpone the elections, then campaigning and ceramahs must be allowed.”
The council also said a total lockdown cannot be imposed to curb the increase in Covid-19 infections as it has been proven to fail before.
The council, which comprises Anwar Ibrahim (PKR), Mohamad Sabu (Amanah), Lim Guan Eng (DAP) and Wilfred Madius Tangau (Upko), also warned the government not to go overboard in taking enforcement action against individuals and businesses found to be violating SOPs.
“Instead, focus on increasing education and awareness among the people to address the challenges posed by the Omicron wave,” they said.
Yesterday, electoral reform group Bersih told the government to announce SOPs for candidates and parties as soon as possible for the Johor state elections.
Its chairman, Thoman Fann, said this would give candidates ample time to make preparations to comply with the SOPs. - FMT
