Will PH come to Ismail’s rescue?

PETALING JAYA: Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi says the current government will not collapse even if Perikatan Nasional (PN) pulls its support for it.

Noting how the slim support Barisan Nasional had in the Johor state assembly forced the coalition to call for the state elections, he said the situation was the same in the federal government, where Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has a “weak majority”.

“That is why the federal government should take the same steps as in Johor. If the rumours are true that Ismail was threatened, that doesn’t mean the current government will collapse,” he said.

“This government can still be saved with the support of PH (Pakatan Harapan) MPs.

“Moreover, there is an MoU (memorandum of understanding) between the government and PH. The question is, whether the support is unconditional.”

Puad said among the reasons for Johor BN’s push to dissolve the state assembly was the 2022 state budget barely being passed after 27 PH assemblymen abstained from the vote.

“Also, we were unable to appoint a Johor senator from MCA due to vehement opposition from Bersatu,” he added.

He was responding to a statement from Federal Territories Umno Youth chief Nizham Abdullah Hamidi earlier today, who said the recent threats by Bersatu and PAS to withdraw support for Ismail was a perfect example of why the country needed a new mandate from the people.

Suggesting that Ismail’s weak support threatened the country’s stability, Puad said it also scared off investors and affected the civil service.

“So, is a political scenario like this healthy?” he said. “Therefore, Nizham’s suggestion for the government to get a new mandate is correct.” - FMT
