Angry Johor voters will punish BN, says PKR candidate

JOHOR BAHRU: Johor PKR Wanita chief Napsiah Khamis claims the people are angry with Barisan Nasional for calling for snap polls in the state amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Napsiah, who is contesting in Kempas, said she believed voters would show their anger at BN in Saturday’s polls.

“They didn’t ask for the election,” she told FMT. “The government has forced them to vote in the middle of the pandemic. Obviously, they are angry.”

The Johor state assembly was dissolved on Jan 22 after weeks of speculation, paving the way for the fourth state election since GE14, after Sabah, Melaka and Sarawak.

Bersatu and PAS leaders who were in the previous Johor state government decried the dissolution, saying the decision was made unilaterally by BN.

Referring to PH’s defeats in Melaka and Sarawak, Napsiah said she did not believe they showed that voters were tired of the opposition or that they were punishing the coalition for its failure to fulfil all of its election pledges.

“It is not that we failed to fulfil our promises, but we were not given enough time to do that,” she said in reference to the ouster of the PH administration in 2020.

She also said the blame for political instability in the country must lie with the current government, and added that this made a sham of BN’s election theme of “Stability for the Future”.

“I believe the voters in Johor are smart enough to know this. They are not tired of PH. They are tired of the political instability,” she said.

Napsiah is in a seven-cornered fight in Kempas. Her rivals are BN’s Ramlee Bohani, Bersatu’s Faizal Abdullah, Pejuang’s Nornekman Osman and independents Azman Abd Rahman, Mohd Suhimi A Rahman and Tok Hambali.

She acknowledged that Kempas was a tough seat to win, but said she was unfazed.

“Despite being the only woman candidate, I’m not nervous or scared at all. For me, this is a battle to see who is worthy of leading Kempas and I leave that to the voters,” she said. - FMT
