DAP cries money politics after surau thanks MCA candidate for RM5k

JOHOR POLLS | DAP's Paloh candidate Sheikh Omar Ali's campaign manager has complained about money politics after a video emerged showing a surau representative thanking his MCA rival Lee Ting Han for RM5,000 amid campaigning for the Johor polls.

"This act of money politics and corruption has tainted the Johor polls, particularly in Paloh. This is how BN courts support by handing out cash," Abdul Majid Abd Aziz (above) said in a statement.

Lee, when contacted, maintained the money did not come from him.

"I had never given or agreed to give anything as claimed. The video clearly showed me saying that I was not involved," he said.

Lee added that he would leave the matter to the authorities as a police report had been lodged.

In the video, the surau representative is seen thanking Lee for RM5,000, to which Lee responded that the money came from the local Umno committee.

The representative then said it didn't matter as long as they received the money which will be used to buy chairs and tables for Ramadan.

He also announced to people at the surau that the food served to them was sponsored by BN and invited Lee to speak to them.

Lee then introduced himself as BN's candidate for Paloh and said he hope to be allowed to serve the people.

Police report lodged

Abdul Majid said this was an offence under Section 10(a) of the Election Offences Act 1954.

The section states that anyone who directly or indirectly offers or promises money or valuable consideration to voters in order to influence their voting preference is deemed to have committed bribery and carries a punishment of up to one-year imprisonment and a fine of up to RM2,000.

Abdul Majid said he had lodged a report and hoped the police and MACC would look into the matter and "deter MCA from tainting the Johor election with money politics".

Apart from Sheikh Omar, who is representing Pakatan Harapan and Lee, who is contesting under BN, the other candidates in Paloh are Perikatan National's V Selvendran and Pejuang's Aminuddin Johari.

Campaigning for the Johor polls kicked off on Feb 26, and Johoreans will go to the polls tomorrow, March 12. - Mkini
