TEENAGE water skier Aaliyah Yoong Hanifah produced a golden finish to the Moomba Masters in Melbourne yesterday.

The 18-year-old Malaysian's exploits on the Yarra River earned her the overall gold.

She placed ninth in the slalom, fourth in jump and third in tricks. Aaliyah's versatility saw her amassing a total of 2,668.52 points, ahead of Chile's Valentina Gonzalez (2,323.40) and New Zealand's Courtney Williams (2,082.85) for the overall title.

It was a signifcant success for Aaliyah who recorded her first ever win in the open category, going up against world-class rivals,

It was also a huge step-up for Aaliyah who had excelled in the tricks for many years before making inroads in both the slalom and jump.

"It has been an incredible week for me and the highlight has got to be taking third in open women's tricks," said Aaliyah.

"That happened to be my first world-level podium finish in the open category, and I'm pleased about that."

Malaysian Waterski and Wakeboard Federation head coach Hanifah Yoong said: "This is the coming of age acid test for Aaliyah and she proved her competitiveness at the world level by getting into the finals of the tricks and jump in the open category.

"She also proved that she is becoming more independent and can manage an event by herself after traveling to Melbourne on her own." - NST
