KUALA LUMPUR: The government will take steps to ensure that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) will continue to grow in the country as well as in regional markets, said Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
He said SMEs were important to the country’s development because they provide more than eight million job opportunities to Malaysians.
Ismail said as part of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), the government intended to ensure that SMEs contribute 45% of the gross domestic product by 2025.
“This target is realistic as SMEs contributed 39% of Malaysia’s GDP in 2019 before the Covid-19 pandemic and the floods last year,” he said when officiating the 2022 National Entrepreneurs Day at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur tonight.
The prime minister said the government was working to ensure that entrepreneurs can develop their businesses by allocating billions of ringgit in funds to help them to expand.
The Tekun Nasional financing scheme, he said, offers interest-free loans of up to RM10,000, where priority is given to traders in the informal sector with funds for this programme totalling RM200 million.
“Agrobank also offers interest-free loans of up to RM75,000 with a six-month moratorium facility,” he said. - FMT
