If PM confident in Johor polls, open borders earlier, Anwar says

JOHOR POLLS | Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has dismissed Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob's reported confidence in BN's chances to win the Johor election.

He pointed at Putrajaya's decision to open international borders by April 1, only after the state polls.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Monday reportedly said BN has a good chance to win a two-thirds majority in the 56-seat Johor state assembly.

Anwar (above), however, questioned Ismail Sabri’s apparent confidence as the prime minister should have then reopened the borders to allow Malaysians in Singapore to return and vote on March 12.

"If he's truly confident, what difference do these two weeks make?

"He is actually not confident. If prime minister Ismail Sabri is really confident in his strength, he can reopen borders before April 1 to allow the people to make their decision.

"If he's not confident, he can't be the prime minister," said Anwar to reporters in Gambir today when asked for comments on Ismail Sabri's remarks.

Malaysia and Singapore currently have a Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) arrangement but new regulations are being formulated for daily commuters across the causeway.

Under relaxed Covid-19 testing requirements, all international travellers will be required to undergo pre-departure testing within two days of departing for Malaysia, and test again once they reach Malaysia.

They will not be required to do a Covid-19 self-test on days two, four, and six after their arrival, or have professionally conducted antigen (RTK-Ag) tests on days three and five. - Mkini
