Johor polls: Turnout rate stands at 29 pct as of 12pm

 


The turnout rate for the Johor state election taking place today stands at 29 percent as of 12pm, according to the Election Commission (EC).

Bernama reported that voters had begun lining up at polling centres as early as 7am this morning, even though voting officially opens at 8am.

Among the early birds were two former Johor menteri besars Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Sahruddin Jamal.

Khaled, who did not contest in the election this time, cast his vote at SK Taman Rinting 1, Pasir Gudang for the Permas seat, while Sahruddin, who is the Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate for Bukit Kepong, voted at SJK Cina Lenga, Pagoh in Muar.

A total of 1,021 polling stations were opened for the voting process today to allow 2,539,606 ordinary voters, out of 2,597,742 registered voters to exercise their rights.

There are 239 candidates from 15 political parties contesting for 56 state seats in this state election.

Most polling centres will close at 6pm today while 41 centres will close at 4pm, 15 polling stations closing at 2pm, two at 1pm and one polling centre with only a couple of channels will close at 11am.

Meanwhile, Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin and his wife Noorainee Abdul Rahman had arrived at the polling centre at SMK Sri Muar at 9.05am to cast their votes for the Maharani state seat. - Mkini
