PETALING JAYA: Kedah will not be allowed to export ketum to Thailand, said home minister Hamzah Zainudin.
He said the decision was made following Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Md Nor’s proposal that the state be permitted to export the substance.
“That was their request. Maybe, it was the Kedah menteri besar’s personal request.
“We will look into this but, for the moment, exports of ketum from Kedah will not be allowed,” Berita Harian quoted him as saying.
Hamzah cited existing laws related to ketum products.
It was reported yesterday that Sanusi had asked the federal government to allow Kedah to export ketum legally to Thailand.
He said if permitted, the exports would comply with certain rules to ensure they were done in an orderly manner.
He said ketum was available commercially in Thailand and that entrepreneurs in Malaysia could process it into finished products. - FMT
