PETALING JAYA: A European mobile network trade body has urged Malaysia to reconsider the single wholesale model for 5G technology. The group said there is time to shift to more flexible delivery options as 5G technology is still new.
Julian Gorman, Asia-Pacific head for the UK-based Global System for Mobile Communications Association, said single wholesale networks in three countries had not delivered “better and cheaper” services as promised.
The networks in Mexico, Belarus and Rwanda each faced distinct challenges, including rollout speed, service quality and profitability.
Government-owned Digital Nasional Bhd has been appointed the sole network wholesaler to roll out 5G mobile networks. Last week, finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said it was the best solution to accelerate the implementation of the technology.
Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has warned that the lack of transparency could lead to a scandal on the scale of 1MDB.
Gorman said Malaysia still had time to develop a flexible regulatory framework as 5G networks have yet to be fully adopted globally.
Alternative delivery options would protect against any failure by the sole wholesaler to meet its obligations, he said.
He also urged the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to implement a wholesale regulatory system. - FMT
