Najib: Ambulance stopping for convoy not PM's fault

The prime minister should not be blamed for the recent incident where an ambulance was stopped to give way to his convoy, according to former premier Najib Razak.

Najib, who held the top executive post for nine years, said that a prime minister does not control how his motorcade operates.

“I think that was not intentional (decision by the prime minister).

“Because when the prime minister is in a convoy, (the convoy) is controlled by other people. Not the prime minister,” Najib said.

He was asked about the issue by a reporter on the sidelines of his campaign trail in Bukit Gambir this afternoon.

The Pekan MP was asked to comment on a slew of recent incidents which saw ambulances stopped by police to give way to convoys of vehicles carrying VVIPs.

These include an incident several days ago when a private ambulance with its emergency siren blaring was stopped to make way for Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob's motorcade in Johor Bahru.

Sources have told Malaysiakini the incident that occurred last Saturday happened because there was a risk of the ambulance colliding with Ismail Sabri's convoy.

Meanwhile, Najib was also asked to comment on former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin's remarks against him in Parliament yesterday.

Muhyiddin had said he was thankful Najib is no longer a prime minister, saying that Najib would not have launched an operation to recover 1MDB monies.

To this, Najib responded by saying that Muhyiddin himself had failed as a prime minister.

"When he (Muhyiddin) was the prime minister, he failed. That's why many people lost their confidence in him.

"Because when he was the prime minister, Muhyiddin imposed the longest lockdown that the world has seen ever.

"He also suspended Parliament, the only country to have done that, and suspended the Constitution, on the pretext of fighting Covid-19.

"But everyone knows that the main objective of this was not to fight Covid-19 but it was a political move to save his position," Najib said. - Mkini
