Najib sues Shamsul for defamation over 1MDB case

Najib Razak has slapped a defamation suit against Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin after the PKR information chief failed to retract and apologise for his allegation against him.

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Najib Razak has sued PKR information chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin for defamation following his failure to retract, correct, and apologise for claiming that Najib had stolen RM2.6 billion in 1MDB funds to support his lifestyle.

On Feb 23, Shamsul, who is the Hang Tuah MP, also accused former Goldman Sachs banker Tim Leissner and fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low, of using the public’s money to support their lifestyles in a Facebook post.

“The Hang Tuah Jaya MP and PKR information chief has failed to respond to my lawyer’s letter of demand.

“With this, I have instructed my lawyer to file a defamation suit against Shamsul in court,” Najib wrote on his Facebook page today.

He denied Shamsul’s claims and said that despite what had been proven in court, the opposition had continued to push its propaganda that he had allegedly stolen RM2.6 billion to purchase rings and handbags.

“They will not admit that I have been sued under the AMLA (Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001) and neither stolen nor robbed and the funds have been returned to the sender.

“… that I was charged with nine counts of receiving the alleged RM2.6 billion funds and also charged with seven counts of returning the funds to the sender four months after it was deposited into the account in my name,” he said.

Najib also went on to say the Saudi Arabian finance ministry transferred at least RM642 million to an account in his name which was then used for CSR work, including flood relief for four consecutive years, and not for his personal use.

“So, how do I rob RM2.6 billion to keep and ‘cover my lifestyle’?” he asked.

Najib is standing trial on 25 charges of abuse of power and money laundering over alleged 1MDB funds amounting to over RM2 billion deposited into his AmBank accounts between February 2011 and December 2014. - FMT
