PAS MP wants action against employers who don't permit headscarves

PARLIAMENT | Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PAS-Pasir Mas) has asked the government to take action against employers who do not allow women workers to wear headscarves.

When debating the second reading of an amendment to the Employment Act 1995 in the Dewan Rakyat today, the PAS Youth chief gave an example of the violation of rights of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight attendants who are not allowed to wear headscarves while working.

“In workers' rights, for example, I welcome how the government has blocked or reduced discrimination against pregnant women, and this is a good thing.

“But what about the rights of veiled women? It is clear that in Malaysia Airlines, for example, flight attendants are not allowed to wear headscarves.

“We do not want to make it obligatory to wear a headscarf but we want to give rights to Muslim women to be allowed to wear a headscarf if they wish to.

"Also, if there are other companies or employers who do not allow their employees to wear headscarves, it is clearly against the act and the government needs to take action," he said.

At the same time, the MP also addressed the issue of sexual harassment, where he asked the government to encourage employers to constantly brief employees on the issue of sexual harassment in the workplace.

He related the controversy over a provocative scene in a local drama recently to the need for sexual harassment awareness in the workplace.

“Sexual harassment briefings should be given periodically so that employees know what is included under sexual harassment,” he said. - Mkini
