Putrajaya tables constitutional amendment bill

PARLIAMENT | Putrajaya has tabled a constitutional amendment bill that will affect the status of the royal households as voters.

The bill seeks to add Article 119A to the Federal Constitution to exempt Malay rulers, their spouses and heirs from being subject to Article 119.

Article 119 was amended in 2019 to reduce the voting age to 18 from 21 and that every citizen who reaches the age of 18 will be included in the voter list by the Election Commission.

It was better known as the "Undi18" amendment.

The new amendment bill will be applied retrospectively and thus in force since Dec 15, 2021 - the same date on which the Undi18 amendment took effect.

This is the second constitutional amendment bill tabled by the Ismail Sabri Yaakob administration.

The previous bill - which amended constitutional provisions concerning Sabah and Sarawak - was passed by 199 MPs, far above the 148 required. - Mkini
