BUTTERWORTH: The Penang Port Commission will send a written review on the undersea tunnel project to the state government next week.

Its chairman, Tan Teik Cheng, said the commission and Penang Port Sdn Bhd were in the process of completing the review, which will include a detailed report from the shipping point of view.

“We will submit a detailed report, including terms of expertise from the angle of shipping, related to (the construction of the undersea tunnel) next week for further action by the state government.

“We have our reservations on the undersea tunnel and have listed them in the report,” he told reporters here today.

Tan was commenting on news reports that the state government had not made a final decision on the feasibility study of the undersea tunnel project, which was tabled at a state executive council meeting last February.

Earlier, Tan conducted a working visit to the Sultan Abdul Halim ferry terminal in Butterworth and the Raja Tun Uda ferry terminal in George Town to view the upgrading work at the two locations.

Chief minister Chow Kon Yeow had reportedly said that the state government would make a decision on the undersea tunnel after receiving the written review on the project’s feasibility study.

He said the written review was necessary to allow the state government to make further considerations, even though the feasibility study indicated that the undersea tunnel project could technically be carried out.

The 6.5km undersea tunnel and three main roads are among several projects which are part of the Penang Transport Master Plan costing RM46 billion.

It was previously reported that concession company Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd had completed and handed over the feasibility study to the state government in December 2020. - FMT
