Warisan MPs want Parliament to debate RM63b 'award' to Sulu sultan's kin

PARLIAMENT | Warisan MPs are demanding that the Dewan Rakyat accept a debate motion on the US$14.92 billion (RM62.59 billion ) arbitration award to the descendants of the Sulu sultanate.

In a joint statement, the seven Warisan MPs said the motion by Kota Belud MP Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis was of national importance and must be taken seriously by the House.

"The award by the Arbitration Court in Paris is not a trivial matter and will have huge implications if it is not resolved immediately.

"An urgent debate and resolution by the House are paramount because we represent 32.7 million Malaysians.

"We must ensure that these baseless claims by the Sulu sultanate and Philippines will end once and for all," said the MPs.

Yesterday, Isnaraissah, in her speech at the Dewan Rakyat, lashed out at Putrajaya for failing to defend Sabah from repeated territorial claims from the Philippines and the Sulu sultanate.

"Suddenly, we were given a shock by the Arbitration Court in Paris. The question is, where was Malaysia's representative at the proceedings? Were we not informed?

"What will we do now? Will we pay? It is better for Putrajaya to pay the RM63 billion to Sabah to fulfil Putrajaya's commitment," said Isnaraissah.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Attorney-General's Chambers had previously explained that Malaysia did not participate in the proceedings because they regard it as illegitimate.

"The government of Malaysia did not recognise the claim and did not participate in the purported arbitration proceedings because Malaysia has always upheld and has never waived its sovereign immunity as a sovereign state.

"In addition, the subject matter of the claim is not commercial in nature and thus cannot be subject to arbitration, and the 1878 agreement contains no arbitration agreement.

"We further stress that the claimants' identities are doubtful and have yet to be verified," they said. - Mkini
