PETALING JAYA: Some 25 residents associations (RA) in Puncak Alam have voiced support for the government’s plan to build an East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) station there, says the chairman of one of the RA.

Haniff Md Sultan, chairman of Permuafakatan Persatuan Penduduk Puncak Alam, said the approval for an ECRL station in the area is the result of a series of discussions between residents and the government.

He told FMT that a letter and joint agreement from those meetings were then submitted to finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz for him to hand over to the transport ministry.

“We had asked the finance minister for help over the construction of an ECRL station, and he helped submit the letter to the transport ministry,” he said.

Earlier this week, a residents group in Elmina Gardens, Denai Alam, questioned the need to build an ECRL station in the area, saying it would be good for development but will not be useful to residents.

Elmina Gardens residents association chairman William Ho said an MRT line linking the area to the Klang Valley would be more beneficial.

Haniff pointed out that Denai Alam was outside the Kuala Selangor district and said the 25 RAs were merely presenting the wishes of the local community in asking for an ECRL station.

He said the station would yield a positive economic effect in the area, which has more than 100,000 residents.

“The ECRL involves cargo and passengers. Puncak Alam has many factories, while Alam Jaya has shop lots. I think there’s no issue. This infrastructure will develop Puncak Alam’s economy and positively impact Kuala Selangor,” he said.

On June 6, Tengku Zafrul announced that the government had approved the construction of an ECRL station in Puncak Alam following meetings with chairmen of various residents associations in the area. - FMT
