Cancer fighter Haris Ibrahim lifts spirits at Bar march

KUALA LUMPUR: A rare public appearance by veteran activist Haris Ibrahim lifted the spirits of many lawyers who gathered at Padang Merbok for the Malaysian Bar’s “Walk for judicial independence” this morning.

Haris, who is battling lung cancer, arrived at Padang Merbok in a wheelchair to the surprise of many.

People were seen gathering around him and offering their well wishes. Others thanked him for coming and took photos with Haris, who founded the Anything But Umno (ABU) movement.

Haris himself was in a jovial mood as he chatted with the lawyers.

He told reporters later he felt it was important for him to attend the event, adding that it was the “duty” of the lawyers to march for judicial independence.

“It is important to stand up and defend the judiciary, the third pillar of democracy. That is why I am here to support my brothers and sisters.

“I just need to be careful because I only have one lung, I cannot afford a Covid-19 infection,” he said in jest.

The march, which was supposed to start at Padang Merbok and end at the Parliament building, was called off after negotiations between the Bar and police broke down.

The police wanted to allow only 20 lawyers to march to the Parliament building to hand over its memorandum to the government, which the Bar rejected.

The lawyers tried to go ahead with the march but failed to break through the police human barricade formed at both ends of the Padang Merbok car park.

Subsequently, deputy law minister Mas Ermieyati Samsudin arrived at Padang Merbok to accept the memorandum from Bar president Karen Cheah. - FMT
