Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg says the state's revenue in the first six months of the year is among the highest ever recorded.
Without disclosing the amount, he said the strong revenue performance has given the state government confidence to announce a special financial assistance (BKK) equivalent to two months’ salary for state civil servants.
“I have received the report for the first six months and it is quite encouraging. I cannot disclose the figure now, so wait until the state budget is tabled.
“But today, I dare to announce a two-month bonus for civil servants and others who have worked hard because I have seen all the figures,” Bernama quoted him as saying after officiating at the Sarikei Division Sarawakku Sayang Programme 2026 in Sarikei today.
Meanwhile, he said the state government would focus on developing Sarikei through the tourism, green economy and high-value agriculture sectors until 2030.
He said Sarikei’s extensive mangrove forests has the potential to become an important asset in the global carbon economy.
Efforts are also being made to extend the runway at the Tanjung Manis Airport to enable ATR aircraft operated by AirBorneo to land there, he added.
The premier also announced the addition of 10 dialysis machines at Sarikei Hospital in view of the increasing number of patients.
Abang Johari said the government would study a proposal to build a new road linking Sarikei with Bukit Kinyau to complete the bypass network and open up new areas for development.
The 4.95km Sarikei bypass project, which began construction on April 17, 2024 at a cost of RM35 million, is 96% complete against the scheduled 96.85%. - FMT
